English vesion: Daily life
This week we finally started to work. We were early in the practice Tuesday morning. Although our working permits were not arrived yet, we could do some training on the computer. Happily, at 9.30, the permits were there and I could start seeing patients. Rob had to wait until the afternoon, because he is not scheduled in on Tuesday morning. Well, here the patients have the same problems as in The Netherlands. The only thing is that they are very patient and kind, and not so demanding. Much different, however, is that the insurance does not cover the visits at the GP and that they partly have to pay their medicines. Even though they are free of charge if they had an accident (from sprained ankles and small wounds/bruises to complex fractures) and there are funds for disability and taking care of sick/disabled children. For all that funds are different forms and rules. And they change again if the problem stays for a longer period of time, etc. So we spend a lot of time on those forms. Nice is that the colleagues, nurses and assistants are very kind, patient and helpful. Continuing challenge is New Zealand English. People talk unclear, with a heavy accent and are often hard to understand. It is a relief when you see an Aussie or Britain. We will probably get used to it.
Besides that normal life is starting and our long holiday (although including taking care of a lot of things like a car, permits, medical council, home, furniture, etc) is finished, is also the season changing. It is cold at night and there was some snow on the mountaintops yesterday morning, but during the day temperature rises easily to 17-20°C (63-68°F). And again and again sunshine, hardly no rain. The trees are coloring and the leafs are beginning to fall, autumn in April.
And, of course, we are busy buying a new home and the furniture. We prepared ourselves very good at home in the Netherlands and knew what was on the market. Alas there were only a few rental homes and they were expensive and not furnished. So it was better to buy a house, especially as they are rather easy to sell again. So we found a home with enough room for visitors.
Last week it was Easter and here it is, as it is in the Netherlands, a weekend where a lot of furniture shops are opened and they give huge discounts. So we have bought a lot of furniture, sheets, pans, plates, etc. Besides that, I decided that I would like to have a bike to be independent from the car. So, yesterday we went to a store and ended up with 2 bikes a couple of hours later.
At 4 in the afternoon we took our bikes and biked to the shore partly on our running track. Pooh, that was tough. Running is a hell of a job because it is all up and down, biking is much harder in going up and I liked my gears and needed my smallest to climb up. Going down is much easier and sometimes a bit fast and I don’t belief that the mandatory bicycle helmet provides sufficient protection. After one hour biking we sat on a terrace in the little harbor of Mapua drinking a beer and a three-berry-cider with olives, tapenade and bread. Enjoying, of course again with sunshine and beautiful landscape around us. We took another route back and came finally home, me exhausted and needing the shower as much as after the run this morning.
Something else to get used to is eating different. In the village of Upper Moutere is a take away restaurant where you can get fish and chips. The parents of Robert got some and were here outside eating it last Friday, when Hesté and us came back from the practice. It was so tempting that I drove to the village to buy us a portion. Waiting to be served, there came Hesté and her mom, also tempted, picking up their order. But most of the times we try to eat healthy: eggs from the neighbors, vegetables from the neighbors, beef and lamb. Only this week the vegetable is pumpkin and that I have never prepared one. Thus, looking on Internet: pumpkin soup, pumpkin bread, pumpkin puree, etc. Then, you are going to guess how much a pumpkin is weighing. Well, the one I got was pretty heavy and I think it weights without seeds and peel more than 5kg. To make soup I needed only 2kg, so what to do with the rest. Let us try bread, muffins…. and still there is too much. And how are you making such a hard pumpkin ready for use for bread and muffins: make puree! Rob cut the first half in small pieces to make soup. After we noticed that those softened very well after half an hour boiling, we let the second half in bigger pieces, because the cutting is not easy. I just read on Internet that making puree is very easy when you remove the seeds and inner part of the pumpkin, cuts it in four parts and put it in the oven. Poor Rob, all the work for nothing. But, after all the first experiment was very successful. I had chosen to make a recipe with garlic, onions, curry and chili peppers. That combined very well with the soft, sweet taste of the pumpkin. Now the first load to make puree is in the oven and we will let you know how the bread and muffins tasted. O and don’t forget the cleaned seeds, that are roasted and mixed with the bread. I feel like a real housewife!
